There are festivals you attend, and then there is Burning Man — a temporary city built by dreamers, artists, and curious souls in the middle of the Nevada desert. It is dusty, raw, chaotic, beautiful, emotional, and unlike anything else on Earth.
Our team of festival lovers travelled to Black Rock City with open minds and very few expectations. What we found was an extraordinary community that exists for just nine days every year, then disappears completely, leaving no trace behind.
Burning Man is not simply an event.
It’s a way of living — briefly — in a world shaped by creativity, generosity and radical self-expression.

✨ What Makes Burning Man Unforgettable
Burning Man is built around 10 Principles, the most famous of which are:
- Radical inclusion
- Radical self-reliance
- Gifting
- Decommodification
- Participation
- Leave no trace
These are not slogans printed on banners — they are lived, every day, by everyone. When you arrive in Black Rock City, you don’t just go to a festival. You become part of the city.
What makes Burning Man unforgettable is not a stage or an artist, but the feeling of being surrounded by 80,000 people who are free, expressive, respectful, and deeply creative.
The Playa (the dry lakebed where the event takes place) becomes an open-air museum, nightclub, playground and spiritual sanctuary. At any hour, something is happening:
- gigantic wooden sculptures stand against the horizon
- art cars drive past glowing under neon lights
- a temple rises in the silence, waiting to be burned
- strangers offer you gifts without expecting anything in return
- the sun turns the dust gold at sunrise
There is no place like this. You feel it the moment you arrive.
💬 Our Personal Experience
We travelled as a small team of festival lovers, sharing a dusty van filled with water containers, instant coffee, lights for our bikes, and an absurd amount of glitter. We had heard countless stories, but nothing prepared us for the emotional intensity of the experience.
The arrival
We arrived at night, crawling through miles of headlights and dust.
At the gate, volunteers hugged us, handed us a map, and said:
“Welcome home.”
It sounds theatrical, but it felt real. The desert swallowed us in darkness, and then, suddenly, the lights of Black Rock City appeared. It was like arriving on a different planet.
The first morning
We woke up covered in dust. Everything was white: our tents, our hair, our clothes. The sun was brutal, the air bone-dry. But we stepped outside and saw:
- sculptures taller than buildings
- bikes decorated with fuzzy fur and LEDs
- smiling burners offering coffee, pancakes, cocktails
Within minutes, someone handed us fruit, another hugged us, another gave us a necklace. On the Playa, giving is more natural than buying.
The community
There are no brands, no ads, no shopping.
There are only people.
You talk to strangers. You dance together. You laugh. You ride your bike across the desert in silence, then suddenly stumble into a camp where a swing set is suspended 20 feet above the ground. You climb, swing, scream, and feel alive.
Burning Man is not a spectator event. You participate.
And that makes the memories deeper.
🗺️ How to Get There
Most international travelers fly to:
✈️ Reno airport (1.5h drive)
✈️ San Francisco (6h drive)
From there, you either:
✔ drive a rental car
✔ join a convoy
✔ use the Burner Express bus
✔ rent an RV (expensive but comfortable)
Traffic can be brutal. Arrivals often take 4–10 hours in a slow stream of dusty vehicles. And leaving can take just as long.
You need:
- goggles
- masks
- water
- a lot of patience
- a sense of humor
🎟️ Tickets & Registration
Burning Man tickets are allocated by lottery. There are several sales:
- Pre-sale (very expensive)
- Main sale (standard price)
- Last chance sale
- Low-income program
Prices vary, but expect $575–$2,500 depending on tier.
Do not buy tickets anywhere except official channels.
Once you have a ticket, you need:
✔ vehicle pass
✔ early arrival pass (if staying with a theme camp)
✔ parking plan
Tickets are scanned at the gate. You drive in slowly, hugging any staff who approach — they genuinely want you to feel welcome.
🏕️ Where to Stay
There are several options:
1. Theme Camps
This is the most social experience. Camps offer:
- shared meals
- shelter
- shade
- activities
- bar or event to gift to others
We stayed in a mid-size camp. People cooked breakfast, helped repair bikes, told stories at night and created a sense of belonging.
2. RVs
Expensive, comfortable, great if you like sleep.
You still get dusty — nothing escapes the Playa.
3. Tents / Hexayurts
More affordable, very hot during the day.
We recommend shade structures.
🍽️ Food & Survival
You must bring everything you need.
Burning Man is a temporary city without shops.
There is only ice for sale. Everything else is brought or made by participants.
This includes:
- food
- water (at least 4 liters per person per day)
- coffee
- snacks
- electrolytes
The magic: people share.
One morning while we were struggling to cook oatmeal, a woman from a neighboring camp arrived with freshly baked cinnamon rolls. She didn’t know us. She simply said:
“I made too many. Enjoy.”
We have never tasted a cinnamon roll so good.
🎶 Art, Music & Performances
There is no lineup.
No headliners are announced.
You discover everything by exploring.
You cycle across the desert, find a glowing shape, approach — and discover:
- a DJ booth on a floating platform
- opera singers on a moving ship
- a jazz band at sunrise
- a fire dancer surrounded by drums
- a giant robot shooting flames at the night sky
Every camp contributes something. It might be:
- free crepes
- swing classes
- a meditation temple
- workshops
- poetry readings
- a bar with 200 kinds of tequila
You never know what is waiting around the corner.
🔥 The Art Cars
Burning Man has legendary mutant vehicles:
- Mayan Warrior
- Robot Heart
- Dusty Rhino
- Unicorn cars
- Viking ships
- Fire-breathing dragons
You hop on, someone hands you water, someone else hugs you, music starts, and suddenly you are dancing under the stars.
At sunrise, the music softens, the desert glows pink, the dust becomes gold.
This is where some of our best memories live.
🏛️ The Man & The Temple
Two central installations dominate the event:
1. The Man
A huge wooden sculpture that burns at the end of the week — fireworks, flames, cheering, drums, dancing. It is cathartic, ecstatic, overwhelming.
2. The Temple
Quiet. Emotional. Sacred.
People write messages here:
- for loved ones
- for lost friends
- for hopes, fears, regrets
When the Temple burns, tens of thousands sit in silence.
You hear nothing except fire and crying.
It is one of the most powerful moments we have ever experienced.
🤝 People & Community
Burning Man works because of its culture. Everyone helps. Everyone participates.
The 10 Principles shape behavior:
- No spectators — only participants
- No money — only gifting
- Leave no trace — pack everything out
- Radical inclusion — whoever you are, you are home
We met:
- artists
- tech founders
- hippies
- families with kids
- retirees
- adventurers
- astronauts
- a man dressed as a pineapple
Everyone smiles. Everyone hugs. Everyone shares something.
🎁 The Gift Economy
This is the heart of Burning Man.
You give without expecting anything. It might be:
- a drink
- a hug
- a handmade bracelet
- a bike repair
- a massage
- a moment of conversation
- emotional support
You stop thinking about money.
You start thinking about value.
We will never forget when a stranger handed us a note:
“Thank you for being here.”
We pinned it to our shade tent.
We still have it today.
🧭 Tips for First-Timers
Here is what we wish someone had told us:
✔ Bring more water than you think.
✔ Electrolytes are essential.
✔ Sleep is precious.
✔ Decorate your bike — lights are important at night.
✔ Invest in goggles and a dust mask.
✔ Radical self-reliance is real — prepare for everything.
✔ There is no phone signal — and it’s wonderful.
✔ Bring something to share.
Above all:
👉 Arrive with an open heart.
Burning Man rewards curiosity, kindness and creativity.

- RV rental: $4,000–$10,000
- Food & gear: $300–$1,200

- creative spirits
- artists
- music lovers
- travelers
- people seeking meaning
- those who like challenge and adventure
Burning Man is not perfect for:
- people who want comfort
- brand fans (there are none)
- spectators who don’t participate
This is a place for doing and sharing.
❤️ Our Final Verdict
We have been to festivals on beaches, in cities, forests, mountains and islands. But Burning Man is something else entirely.
It is a temporary world where:
- you are free
- you are accepted
- you are encouraged to be your truest self
We left exhausted, dusty, emotional, and completely happy.
We also left changed.
Burning Man stays with you.
Not because of music or art, but because of the feeling:
“I am part of something bigger, and I matter.”
We cried when the Temple burned.
We danced until sunrise.
We hugged countless strangers who became friends.
We will return.
